Refurbishment of parts is a major component of the Parts Now! philosophy of reusing materials, and shows up in almost every facet of its operations.  The premise is simple:  sell new and refurbished parts and printers, offering a discount for those customers that send in the accompanying old part so that Parts Now! can refurbish the old part and resell it again.  This process makes for a low cost product that meets the strict quality standards of new parts—with the added benefit of decreasing the burden of the local landfill.  That burden—estimated to be over 530 metric tons of parts in 2001 alone—is equivalent to over 60 semi loads of parts per year! 

Though many parts that would normally be thrown away are now refurbished, operations at Parts Now! still yield a large amount of unused parts, scrap material, and assorted waste that would otherwise make its way to a landfill.  Realizing we possessed an opportunity to simultaneously cut down on waste and act in an environmentally responsible manner, Parts Now! began recycling nearly all non-repairable material that was produced from their operations.  Pallet loads of aluminum, steel, computer electronics, urethane foam, cardboard and white paper are recycled every week, along with thousands of laser printer toner and inkjet printer cartridges.  Parts Now! recycled just over 10 metric tons of aluminum, 1,077 lbs. of circuit boards, 1,260 lbs. of aluminum cans, and more than 45 metric tons of steel in the year 2000.  Though the majority of the material recycled by Parts Now! is not required by law to be recycled, we still chose to embark on making recycling and reuse part of our culture since our inception over thirteen years ago. 

The results of Parts Now!’s recycling campaign and day-to-day refurbishment operations have been tremendous.  To put the amount of material recycled in perspective, in the year 2001 alone Parts Now! disassembled, then recycled or reused 7,000 printers that normally would head straight for the landfill.  In addition, each year hundreds of thousands of broken parts are refurbished instead of being discarded.  Looking to the future, Parts Now! will continue its recycling efforts and continually search for new ways to reduce and reuse waste.
